RANDY CUNNEYWORTH
Assistant Coach
Randy Cunneyworth, who is in his second year with the Thrashers as an assistant coach, brings nearly 30 years of professional hockey experience as a player and coach to the team.
Prior to joining the Thrashers, Cunneyworth served as head coach for Rochester of the American Hockey League for eight seasons, guiding the Americans to a 306-244-90 record. During his tenure in Rochester, he earned three 40-plus win seasons, two 100-plus point seasons and six playoff berths. He left the Americans as the longest tenured coach in franchise history and ranks second on their all-time win list. Before being named as their head coach on Sept. 8, 2000, he spent two seasons with Rochester as a player/assistant coach.
During the 2004-05 season, Cunneyworth led the Americans to a 51-23-6 record (112 points), which earned the team the MacGregor Kilpatrick Trophy for the league’s best regular-season record. That season, he was honored with the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Trophy as the AHL’s coach of the year.
Cunneyworth, a native of Etobicoke, Ontario, played 20 seasons of professional hockey, including 16 seasons in the NHL. In 866 career NHL games with Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Hartford, Chicago and Ottawa, he registered 414 points (189 goals, 225 assists) and served as the Senators captain for four seasons. He added 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 45 NHL playoff games, including an appearance in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals with the Sabres.
Originally selected by Buffalo in the eighth round, 167th overall, in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, Cunneyworth also appeared in 273 career AHL games with Rochester and Springfield, recording 270 points (166 goals, 104 assists). He helped Rochester win the 1983 Calder Cup Championship and was honored with the AHL’s Fred T. Hunt Memorial Trophy as the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey.
He and his wife, Jenny, have two sons, Gregory and Cameron.
