What You Really Need To Know
The Thrashers gave one of their best efforts of the season but were thwarted by Nikolai Khabibulin who flat out stole the win for Chicago. Atlanta's 37 shots on goal tied for their second-highest total of the season, and the Thrashers had two goals waived off. The first came when it was determined that time expired in the second period before Ilya Kovalchuk wired in his own rebound past a sprawling Khabibulin. The second was waived off when the referee blew the whistle after losing sight of the puck when Chicago's goaltender slid into the net with the puck. The first call was confirmed by the NHL. The second was not reviewable under NHL rules.

Despite the loss the Thrashers players, as well as their coach, were happy with the way the team executed their game plan and kept up the pressure on the tired Blackhawks who were playing their seventh straight road game. Now the Thrashers will get their own taste of road life as they head to the West Coast for games in Anaheim, LA, Phoenix, and San Jose.

Offensive Spotlight On: Ilya  Kovalchuk
Congratulations to the captain on scoring the 100th power-play goal of his career. Kovalchuk led all Thrashers in ice-time at 23:38 and played one of his stronger games of the season. He was credited with five shots on goal and had another four blocked as the Blackhawks clung to their one-goal lead.

Defensive Spotlight On: Todd  White
It's not often that a forward is one of the top defensive players of the game, but Todd White was outstanding in his own end tonight, breaking up an odd-man rush, stealing the puck off of Patrick Kane's stick on a wraparound attempt, and racking up five steals. White's -1 rating wasn't indicative of his play- he was even until the Blackhawks scored a short-handed empty-net goal to end the game. White was also dangerous at the other end of the ice, putting a team-high six shots on goal while also winning six of 10 faceoffs.

What Went Right
Strong Start. The score was 0-0 after 20 minutes but the Thrashers held an edge in shots (7-6), hits (6-2), takeaways (12-3), blocked shots (4-2) and faceoff wins (9-3) after the opening period. The statistical domination carried over into the second and third periods but didn't result in goals.

- Shots Galore. The Thrashers hit the net 37 times and had 25 shots blocked or go wide. That's  a big change from earlier in the season when the team struggled to get shots off.

- Pressure Cooker. The Thrashers played hard from start to finish and never let up. One of their biggest weaknesses this season has been playing hard for one or two periods and then coasting for long stretches, but tonight's overall effort was beyond reproach, even if the execution wasn't always there.

- Defense First. Kari Lehtonen remarked after the game that he felt like he only played half a game since he went long stretches in the third period without seeing any action. Any night you can make things easy on your goaltender is a good night.

What Could Have Gone Better
- Close, But No Cigar. As previously mentioned, the Thrashers had two goals disallowed. One was definitely the right call. The other? That's debatable.

- Give It Your Best Shot. He's called the Bulin Wall for a reason. The thrashers hit the net 37 times but Nikolai Khabibulin was playing like it was the 2004 playoffs, turning aside just about everything the Thrashers threw at him.

- PK Outage. After being one of the high points since the All-Star break the penalty kill struggled, giving up two quick power-play goals in the second period which ended up being the difference in the game. The penalty-kill went 1-3 on the night with both goals coming from in close.

- What's The Call? According to John Anderson, Patrick Sharp should have been in the box instead of Niclas Havelid in the second period, but the ref called the Swede for slashing even though it was his stick that was broken on the play. Sharp ended up scoring on the ensuing power play, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead.

Three Stars (as selected by the Atlanta Media)
1. Nikolai Khabibulin
2. Ilya Kovalchuk
3. Jonathan Toews

Quotes of the Night
Captain Ilya Kovalchuk on the play of Kari Lehtonen:

"(Lehtonen) has played two unbelievable games. Last night he made 40 saves and was just outstanding and today was the same thing. When our goalie plays well we always have a chance to win the game. He did it two nights in a row, but we didn't help him tonight.
