| What You Really Need To Know |
| Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and assist a day after being present as his wife gave birth to the couple's second child and first son, but the two-goal rally in the third period wasn't enough to dig the Thrashers out of a 3-0 hole as they came out on the losing end against the Flyers for the 14th straight time.
Heading into the game John Anderson juggled his forward lines and mixed up his defensive pairings to make room for Garnet Exelby who played his first game since fracturing his leg in mid-December. Anderson thought the lines had more jump as Kovalchuk skated with Todd White and Bryan Little, Slava Kozlov lined up with Rich Peverley and Joe Motzko, Eric Christensen returned to center Colin Stuart and Colby Armstrong, and Eric Perrin centered Eric Boulton and Chris Thorburn. Marty Reasoner missed the game with an undisclosed illness while rookies Zach Bogosian and Nathan Oystrick were healthy scratches. The Thrashers travel to Tampa Bay Monday afternoon to face the Lightning on Tuesday before returning home to host Chicago on Wednesday night. Whether or not the new lines remain together may depend on Reasoner's health. |

| Offensive Spotlight On: Ilya Kovalchuk |
| The Thrashers captain scored his 22 goal of the year, taking over sole possession of the goal-scoring lead for the team after being tied with Bryan Little. He also assisted on Slava Kozlov's third-period power- play goal, giving him two points on the night and 52 for the season so far. Following the game Kovalchuk suggested that he'd like Slava Kozlov to switch to right wing so the two Russians can play together regularly next season. |
| Defensive Spotlight On: Mathieu Schneider |
| Despite finishing the night -1, Schneider played a solid game and was the lone Thrashers defenseman to pick up a point. The power play, which scored twice, was generally most effective when he was running the point and his willingness to shoot the puck kept the Flyers penalty-killers on their toes. Schneider logged 23:20 of ice time and was credited with a pair of shots, had two blocked, and blocked two himself. |
| What Went Right |
| - Fire When Ready. Atlanta put 12 shots on goal on the first period and nine in the second before blasting 10 more on net in the third. They also missed the net 17 times and had 16 shots blocked. All told the Thrashers pulled the trigger 64 times.
- Power-Play Success. The Thrashers scored twice with the man advantage and Ilya Kovalchuk attributed it to a renewed commitment to work while up a man. Thrashers skaters were more active on the power play, cycling the puck effectively and getting to open spaces. - X Factor. Garnet Exelby logged 13:05 in his first night back and was partially responsible for the game's first goal, but overall he looked good given that it was his first game action in almost two months. Both John Anderson and Exelby himself were happy with his return and both expect to see improvement as he shakes off the rust. |
| What Could Have Gone Better |
| - The Drought Continues. The last time the Thrashers scored a first period goal was Jan. 20- seven games ago. They have one second period goal to their credit in that span. Coming from behind is a lot more tiring than playing with a lead.
- Costly Mistakes. Overall the Thrashers played a decent game against a good team, but the Flyers jumped on mistakes and created their first two goals off of turnovers. The third came on a defensive breakdown on a power play that was the result of an ill-advised penalty. |
| Three Stars (as selected by the Atlanta Media) |
1. Jeff Carter 2. Ilya Kovalchuk 3. Scott Hartnell |
| Quotes of the Night |
| Ilya Kovalchuk on the power play's success:
"We finally started working. We think that if we are on the power play it's time to rest, but we have to work twice as hard if we want to get some momentum. They killed all of our penalties (early) and then scored on the power play so that was the game." |
