The View From Upstairs
After each home game the Thrashers web staff will bring you the "View From Upstairs". It's a work in progress as we try out different things during the preseason but the goal is to highlight facets of the game that you might have missed as you watched the game from the stands, on TV, followed along online or listened to it on the radio.
The Basics
Links: Recap | Score Sheet | Super Stats | Post-Game Press Conference
  • Marian Hossa scored two goals in his first action of the preseason, but the Thrashers suffered their second straight defeat 3-2 against the St. Louis Blues … The Thrashers, 2-2-0 in the preseason, face off against Nashville at Philips Arena on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

  • Defenseman Niclas Havelid, also making his preseason debut tonight, tallied one assist and Eric Perrin recorded one assist for his third point (two goals, one assist) of the preseason.

  • Johan Hedberg appeared in his second game of the preseason and made 23 saves … His record now stands at 1-1-0 this preseason.
Offensive Spotlight On:  Milan  Bartovic  Defensive Spotlight On:  Tobias  Enstrom
Milan Bartovic looked at home playing with Marian Hossa, having played with him at the World Championships and in charity tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Bartovic showed great speed and a nose for the net. He was the key to the Thrashers' first goal when he stole the puck in the neutral zone, crossed the blueline and created a solid scoring chance. The Thrashers maintained possession and Hossa ended p scoring off of a Havelid point shot. It all started with Bartovic's steal in the neutral zone. If the Slovakian forward wants to make the team he'll have to show an ability to play on the third or fourth line as those seem to be the only spots open up front. Playing in his second pre-season game Tobias Enstrom looked nervous but showed plenty of potential. His crisp passes on the power play and from his own zone are exactly what the coaching staff have been looking for. He also broke up several rushes and showed the ability to carry the puck up the ice and beat players one-on-one. The young Swede got plenty of ice time (22:52) in all situations and finished the game -1 after being on the ice for two St. Louis goals (one of which was on the power play). The biggest question for Enstrom is if the coaching staff is willing to let him make rookie mistakes at the NHL level or if they want him to get used to the North American game in the AHL.
What Went Right What Could Have Been Better
  • Great movement on the power play with shots coming from everyone.
  • The Thrashers were much more aggressive on the penalty kill than we're used to seeing and went 5-6 on the penalty kill. They also scored a short-handed goal off a feisty forecheck. In the past the bulk of their shorties have come from breakaways.
  • Parade of penalties. Neither team was able to get into a rhythm and the lines were constantly getting shuffled because the special teams spent so much time on the ice. It's preseason for the refs too though. The Thrashers took six penalties and the Blues were whistled for five.

Head Coach Bob Hartley on Marian Hossa's two-goal effort:
"Hossa showed us he was ready. I don't think there was any surprise. He was our MVP last year and he is showing us that he is going to have another good season."

"Entertaining game. Hossa played great. Kovy was quiet. Enstrom showed promise. Hedberg deserved better. Sterling had wheels (he might stick). Holik was gritty. Klee looked a step slow. That's my view from the seats. "

Play of the Night Next Day Headlines
Marian Hossa went around a defender and powered to the front of the St. Louis net before backhanding a shot over the shoulder of starting goaltender Juuso Riksman to score a short-handed goal and put the Thrashers up 2-1.
